Hiring a Head of Marketing
Memberful is a small remote-first company making membership software for independent publishers, educators, and creators. Our product embraces decentralization by intentionally not trying to do everything. Instead, we focus on building easy to use membership software that integrates tightly with best-in-class complementary services like WordPress, Stripe, and Mailchimp. One of our customers, Craig Mod, recently wrote an excellent essay on running a paid membership program where he goes into detail around why he chose Memberful: “I like Memberful because it’s minimal and allows me to control the look and feel of much of the program on my site.”
To date, we’ve done very little marketing. We’ve focused on building an opinionated product our customers love while providing them with unexpectedly great service. They’ve rewarded us by telling their friends and colleagues about Memberful. But it’s time for us to take responsibility for telling the Memberful story. It’s time to learn more about our target customer and figure out how to let them know we exist. Not in a pushy or tricky way, but in a “this is something you might find valuable” way. We’re looking for someone who’s excited to take ownership of that responsibility and push us forward.
What you’ll work on
You’ll learn about Memberful and the space we operate in by studying our customers and deeply understanding the different jobs Memberful does for them. You’ll leverage those learnings to implement a marketing plan focused on driving interest and awareness. You’ll be responsible for bootstrapping and implementing your plan using your own resourcefulness and external vendors as required. We aren’t looking for growth hacks or quick wins, we’re looking to develop an ongoing healthy relationship with our target customers so they consider Memberful when the time is right.
We know a marketing plan works best when it’s tightly integrated with the entire end-to-end experience, so you’ll also own most of the Memberful website as well as our social accounts. You’ll work directly with the Memberful product team to improve the onboarding experience.
This is an exciting opportunity because your impact will be felt inside and outside the company. Memberful will be markedly better with you here. Internally, our team will learn about the importance of telling our story as we support your efforts. Externally, Memberful will become a more recognized and trusted name in the growing marketplace for membership software. You’ll report directly to the founder and have the autonomy and ongoing support to do your very best work.
You’ve done this before at a small company like Memberful and you’re excited to do it again. You care about doing high-quality work and delivering results. You’re a self-starter with strong work ethic who embraces responsibility and loves to get things done. You have exceptional writing skills, you value deep work, and you respect teammates’ time and focus.
