Building better membership experiences on WordPress
By Dan Carson on Oct 1, 2026
Membership isn't about putting content behind a paywall
The best membership businesses don't simply ask readers to pay before they've experienced the value.
They build trust first.
Readers discover an article through search or social. They consume great work. They begin to understand what makes a publication different. Then they decide whether membership is worth it.
That's why many publishers have embraced approaches like metered paywalls. They create room for curiosity before asking for commitment.
We think that's the direction membership businesses should be moving.
So we've been building the tools to support it.
Helping publishers create better subscription journeys
Over the past several months, we've introduced new capabilities that work together to create a more thoughtful experience for both publishers and readers.
With Metered Paywalls , you can let readers experience your journalism before asking them to subscribe.
Metered paywall supported
For protected posts, you can now customize how many paragraphs readers can preview before reaching the paywall.
With the new Paywall Divider, you decide exactly where the preview ends and premium content begins.
Our new Visual Paywall Builder makes it easy to create a subscription prompt that feels like an extension of your publication instead of a generic popup.
Together, those features help publishers create subscription experiences that feel intentional, helpful, and aligned with their brand.
More control inside WordPress
We also wanted Memberful to feel more at home inside WordPress itself — not force you onto an all-in-one platform that takes over your site to get the flexibility you need.
You can now control the visibility of individual blocks based on a visitor's membership status or plan, making it possible to build richer pages without relying on shortcodes.
Control block visibility
If you use Beaver Builder, you can apply Memberful visibility rules to supported components, including Shared Rows.
Publishers using WP Recipe Maker can also control access to recipe cards based on a member’s plan.
Integrates with WP Recipe Maker
Roles by Plan gives administrators more control over permissions, while features like Hide Ads for Members and Membership Expiry Banners improve the experience for paying subscribers long after they've joined.
Hide ads for members
Each improvement solves a different problem.
Together, they make running a membership business on WordPress simpler, with less time spent on day-to-day admin.
This is just the beginning
These updates are part of a larger commitment to making WordPress a stronger foundation for independent membership businesses.
This isn’t a one-time investment. We’ll keep improving the tools publishers need to convert readers, manage access, and create membership experiences they fully own.
If you’ve got ideas for where we should go from here, we’d love to hear them.
