Kit is an email marketing platform that connects directly with Memberful. Once integrated, Memberful keeps your Kit subscriber list automatically up to date — adding new members, updating existing ones, and tagging subscribers based on their membership details.
In this help article, you’ll learn how to connect Memberful to Kit, keep your subscribers in sync, and use tags and custom fields to create personalized email campaigns.
Integrate Kit
In your Memberful dashboard, go to Content → Email marketing, then click Connect under Kit. You will be asked to enter the API Secret.
To find your API Secret, visit Account settings → API Secret in your Kit account.
How we keep your list up to date and synced
When you first connect, Memberful imports all your existing members as subscribers in Kit. Your list stays automatically synced — new members are added, existing members are updated, and key details are sent as Kit tags. You can use these tags to segment your list and build targeted Kit automations.
To view them, click a subscriber in Kit to see the Memberful tags associated with their profile.
Here are the tags Memberful continuously syncs to Kit:
- Memberful: Every subscriber created or updated by Memberful.
- Memberful: Active Subscription: Member is subscribed to a paid plan.
- Memberful Plan: [Your plan name]: Tags each plan the member has subscribed to.
- Memberful Download: [Your download name]: Tags each download the member has purchased.
- Memberful: All Access Pass: Member has been granted an All Access Pass by you or a team member.
- Memberful Signup Source: Checkout: Member signed up through a Memberful purchase form.
- Memberful Signup Source: Created by Admin: Member was created manually by you or a staff member.
- Memberful Signup Source: Free Registration: Member signed up through the free registration form.
- Memberful Signup Source: Gift: Member received a gifted subscription.
- Memberful Signup Source: Team Subscription: Member joined through a group subscription invite link.
Members are not removed from your subscriber list when their subscription expires. If a member’s subscription ends, Memberful removes the related tags from their profile. If a member changes their email address, Memberful adds the new email as a new subscriber and removes Memberful data from the old one.
Send a targeted broadcast
To send a targeted broadcast (a one-time email), filter your subscribers using Kit’s default filters or the Memberful tags listed above. You can also create a segment that includes multiple tags and send a broadcast to that group.
Add a referral link to your broadcast
If you have enabled Memberful referrals, you can add a referral link to your broadcast so members earn rewards for referring others.
From the Personalize menu in your Kit editor, select Memberful Referral Link or enter this shortcode directly: {{ subscriber.memberful_referral_link }}
Create an automation
First, create a Kit Sequence — a series of emails sent automatically based on when a member joins or is tagged in your list. Then, create an automation to send out the sequence to members tagged with a specific Memberful plan or download.
Use custom field answers for segmentation and personalization
You can collect up to 5 custom fields with Memberful right after your members complete the checkout form.
Fields with predefined options (checkbox and dropdown) are great for segmenting subscribers in Kit — for example, asking where they consume your content or which benefits interest them most.
Fields with free-form answers (text and comment) are great for personalizing email campaigns with details such as nicknames or social handles.
Each selected option in a checkbox or dropdown field becomes a new tag inside Kit.
You can use these tags to build custom segments.
Free-form answers show up as fields in the subscriber’s profile.
Use these fields to personalize your emails.
